It was a shitty old thing, the Nokia. Elizaveta found herself frustrated at every turn. The buttons were wonky, the screen small and difficult to read, and the amount of times she had to press buttons to even spell her name was absurd. Yet at the same time, it was by far Elizaveta’s most treasured possession.
She’d been working on the Nokia for the past three months, trying to get it to work. It was frustrating that Elizaveta could only use magic when she was at Hogwarts—life would have been much easier if she could have worked on it over the summer. Then again, she also would have been constrained in other ways. Technology rarely went haywire over one individual—it was the concentration of magic that caused issues. Coming from a Muggle family, this had never posed a problem for Elizaveta.
Still, a few weeks ago, Elizaveta had gotten the Nokia to function almost entirely. About a month in, her charms started working well enough that the Nokia turned on normally. Elizaveta had been so excited that she had cried. From there on, she’d gotten to work charming the rest of the phone and connecting it to Wizfi, the illegal wireless network for the Wizarding community.
Elizaveta’s work on the Nokia had ended a while ago, and she had now moved onto her next project: an Android. The smartphone had proved much more challenging compared to the Nokia—even with her experience and detailed documentation of the charms and magic she’d used to enchant the previous phone, Elizaveta was still struggling to get the phone to turn on for more than a few minutes before it started malfunctioning. She’d even taken a weekend off to return to her Muggle home to make sure that it wasn’t actually broken.
Today, Elizaveta had actually done a fair chunk of work for once though. She was in an unused classroom that was now mostly used as storage space, which was where Elizaveta often chose to work. No one had ever entered the classroom while she had been there, and Elizaveta had stashed the old Nokia and Android behind a small compartment she’d created in the wall. It only responded to her touch, making it the perfect hiding spot.
Elizaveta couldn’t help but smile as she leaned back against the wall, watching the Android buzz to life. It didn’t do anything—yet—but it would, soon, Elizaveta hoped. For now, watching it turn on and remain blankly at the home screen for a few seconds before going back to sleep was more than enough for her.
She picked up the notebook that sat next to her and scribbled in her notes for the day. Ever the Ravenclaw, Elizaveta kept a detailed list of what charms she’d used on the phone. She’d had to combine an interesting few (many of which came from the NEWT textbook she’d borrowed from an older Ravenclaw student) to get both of the phones to work. Elizaveta was fairly certain there must be a way for her to figure out some sort of enchantment that would simplify the process. That might require her to write spells of her own—an enticing yet simultaneously terrifying idea. If she did them wrong, she might just set the building on fire or worse. She’d have to study further on that at some point. Not to mention the fact that the charms tended to wear off with use…Elizaveta would have to find some way around that so she could keep them usable for a longer period of time.
Elizaveta hummed as she crossed out one of her potential spells that hadn’t worked. It had been a good day. So engrossed in her work was she that Elizaveta didn’t even hear the door creaking open.
