The Wizarding World has always resisted technology, and that hasn’t changed as much as some have hoped in the 21st century. With the increasing tensions between wizard and Muggle kind, technology has become almost taboo, particularly amongst more traditional parties. Much of modern Muggle technology still does go haywire in the middle of magic, and for these reasons (as well as to abide by standard British rule), Muggle technology remains forbidden to use on the grounds of Hogwarts.
Hogwarts, however, would not be the school we all know and love without some rule-breakers. A magic-resistant technology market has developed in the school, including everything from pens to wifi access. Smartphones are not uncommon with modern day Hogwarts students, though getting your hands on one may be pricey and it must be guarded from professors and fellow students alike. Much of this technology has been adapted upon, with wizard specific features being added upon it. As all magic-resistant technology is considered illegal on school grounds, the black market operates mostly by word-of-mouth. Magic-resistant technology is yet to be widespread, particularly amongst purebloods, but if you have the right connections and have enough money in your pocket, you just might be able to have a little piece of the Muggle world in your dorm.
Currently available tech:
i) Phones - Basic phones and smartphones are usually the most popular items on the black market due to their ease of communication. Smartphones are significantly pricier and Wizfi access must be separately purchased.
ii) Wizfi Access - Wizfi is the wizard world’s illegal Wifi, and access is certainly one of the pricier items that students can purchase from the black market. To shield from detection by magical and Muggle authorities alike, the signal is magically masked and bounced across the globe by unknown means. Wizfi access is locked to specific wands and devices, meaning that it is non-transferable from wizard to wizard, and the wand must be tapped against the device before Wizfi use. Wizfi access can be purchased every school year for a hefty sum, and whatever incantation is used to access the network wears off at the end of the year. However, due to how expensive it is and the strict regulations of the black market to prevent detection, Wizfi has great bandwidth and is incredibly fast.
iv) Pens - Pens are the latest hipster trend in Hogwarts, and generally the only widely accepted form of Muggle “technology”. Although many students still use quills, pens have seen a surge in use in the past few years. Most students who do use these writing utensils, particularly Muggleborns, choose to bring their own pens, though if you’re running low on ink cartridges or decide that you have to get your hands on something new, the black market is the place to go.
