It wasn't uncommon for Amelia Fitzgerald to find herself in detention. It was usually for fairly harmless pranks - or at least what she would protest were fairly harmless pranks - though it would occasionally be for skipping a class that she didn't like, or getting into an argument over something that she felt particularly passionate about. That was one thing about Amelia - once she got her mouth going, it was hard to get her to stop. This was fairly rare, as it took a lot to set Amelia off..but it just so happened that that very thing happened in Amelia's History of Magic class. She'd mouthed off to the professor, had several points taken away from Gryffindor (much to her chagrin), and now had a couple of days worth of detention on top of it.
Amelia could think of many other ways that she'd rather spend her afternoon. She was still kicking herself for losing house points, but she still felt that it was worth it. Besides, she was on the Quidditch team. Hopefully Gryffindor could pull off a win and it wouldn't matter that she'd had a few measly points taken away anyway. Not that Amelia personally scored any points on the pitch, as a strictly defensive player, but that was beside the point. Everyone on the Quidditch team had an important role to play, and the Beaters were included in that. But Amelia had no delusions about her role on the team..it wasn't up to her to win the game. The best team had good members all around who respected one another, and Amelia felt that the Gryffindor team truly had that.
When Amelia arrived in detention, she was mildly surprised to see that she wasn't alone. The other person in the classroom was someone who was somewhat familiar to her, at least in a 'we know the same person' sort of way. They'd interacted a handful of times, but Amelia's brother Alfred was usually around when they did. See, the other student in the classroom - Arthur Kirkland - was one of Alfred's good friends. So of course Amelia knew him to some extent..and hoped to get to know him a bit more during this detention!
This would be hard to do while they were first working on lines, but as luck would have it a distraction out in the hallway (likely Peeves) drew the professor out of the room, and Amelia turned to Arthur at once. "So, what are you in for? I apparently need to learn to hold my tongue." She figured this would be an easy enough icebreaker..though ironically, she might be proving her professor's point with this very icebreaker..
