It was with immense trepidation that Lili was headed toward one of the empty classrooms on the hall. There were always some that had no classes; whether they were officially empty or not was up in the air. For example, the one she stepped into now. She was in it; it was no longer empty. Moving quietly, as she always did, she sat her bag down on one of the tables to the side, then pulled herself a seat out to wait. Waiting was never her strong point. Oh, sure, she had patience in droves; she worked on needlepoint by hand, enjoyed listening to her housemates, gardened, and - at home - enjoyed baking things entirely from scratch. No, patience wasn't the problem. It was the anticipation that waiting brought. Anticipation, and with it, nerves. She didn't want to disappoint anyone... least of all her family. And it was family she was waiting here to meet. Gilbert, one of her cousins, was determined to help her with her Defense Against the Dark Arts... deficiency, for lack of a better word. She had the theoretical things down pat. She could explain why a certain spell would be necessary, or what precautions to take against a certain negative outcome. It was the practical that Lili struggled with - the casting of any spells against anyone or anything. She wanted to be a Healer. Healers didn't hurt anyone. She groaned, and pillowed her head on her arms, hiding her face against the tabletop. Why did she have to practice these things? (The answer, she knew, was because everyone had to be at least proficient in the spellwork... and because her Uncle taught the class... and because her family would be so very disappointed in her if she wasn't.) Still... she'd try to look on the bright side. It was time she got to spend with Gil, just the two of them. He always had a grin just for her, and a way to make her laugh. Maybe... maybe he could help her forget just what it was they were practicing. Gilbert Rothstein - I hope this is okay!

Sighing as he walked along the corridor, he eyed each painting as he passed. He had to find some way to get through to his younger cousin, some way to make her see that these lessons were important. Lilly was special to him, and he wanted her to thrive, to shine, to be the best that she could be in her field. He knew that she liked healing, was interested in it as a possible career choice, but she had to ge past Defense Against the Dark Arts. He knew that she didn't want to hurt others, but he couldn't figure out why she was so against protecting. Did she not realize that it all went hand in hand, that in order for her to heal, she had to protect? Perhaps that was the wa he needed to go with this. Gilbert knew that his uncle had tried multiple times and failed with Lily, perhaps there just wasn't the right approach. Their family was excellent when it came to Defense and anything with dueling, fighting... perhaps that was the problem. They were all approaching it the wrong way. A hint of smile crossed his face as he finally made it to the room and entered, smiling at his cousin. Moving to sit across from her, he held out his hands, palms up, silently asking that she put her own on top of his. He wanted her to trust him with this, and to do that, they were going to have to do a bit of talking first. That was going to be lesson one in his head, getting to the bottom of this and hopefully, sorting it all out. "I know you don't want to be here, so today we're just going to talk, ja? So, lets start simple. What do you see yourself doing as a career when you're older? I want to teach here at the school, either in potions or take over for Onkle when he decides to step down. Is there a spot you see taking? A certain place you want to be?"

Finally, her waiting was at an end. The anticipation, not exactly. She was now worried what this was going to turn into, especially since his smile was a lot smaller than she was used to. Still, she managed a tiny smile of her own for him as he sat across from her. It took her a second, when he settled and put his hands on the table, to put her own smaller hands in his. The expression on her face showed her uncertainty, as she searched his face for some sort of answer to the hundred questions in her head. Had she done something wrong already? "I know you don't want to be here, so today we're just going to talk, ja?"The soft intake of breath was involuntary, and her eyes fell to the desk. That had been a bit of a blow. She wanted to spend time with him... but she was nervous about these lessons. "I-It's not that I don't... I just..." But she trailed off, falling silent as he continued to speak. What did she see herself doing as a career? "I... I just want to help people. I want to be a Healer... maybe here, or... or maybe at a hospital." Finally, she looked back up at him. "Or... or, I don't know, maybe I'll make medicines. I like Herbology." Her voice was soft, though it was clear she wanted him to approve. She hadn't really talked about it much with anyone before. Career choices here weren't officially discussed for a few years. She had thought about it a lot, though. What with their family, and everything that had happened, she wanted to make a difference. Besides, she wanted to be someone people could rely on, someone that people would see and remember and come to with problems. She wanted to be more than the littlest, one of the youngest members of her family. It wasn't a good feeling, feeling like she was a burden on her family as she was. She just didn't want to hurt anyone. There was enough of that, enough people hurting people, already. Gilbert Rothstein

"I... I just want to help people. I want to be a Healer... maybe here, or... or maybe at a hospital. Or... or, I don't know, maybe I'll make medicines. I like Herbology.”Gilbert listened to her, thinking as he leaned back in the chair and stared at the wall for a moment. If those were her choices, how could he use those to show her? She didn’t care to learn for her own safety, they had all already tried that way to get her to learn defense. But perhaps… would that work? Perhaps. He just had to plant the ideas in her, and perhaps it would grow. Nodding, he looked back at her and smiled. “Those are all good pathways to take, and I have every belief that they’ll work well for you, that you would fit into those career paths nicely. Even if you change your mind three or four times, I have no doubt that you could do what you put your mind to. “He smiled as he reached over to pat her hand, trying to keep comforting. He wanted his cousin to understand that he knew where she was coming from, and that he did respect her wishes, that he knew that she wasn’t as, well… violent as the rest of them. Gilbert knew that he had some violent tendencies and the worked them out through defense work and dueling. “I know you don’t want to hurt people, and that’s a big part of you not wanting to learn defense. But I have some things I want you to consider for me, if you will. Please, think them over and not just reject them. I know hospitals and clinics and that have guards, well, the big ones do. But the smaller one’s might not. What if someone comes in after you’re patient, and the guards can’t get to you quickly? Defense is more about self-protection. In this case, with an understanding and practice of defense, you can keep the attacker away from your patient long enough for the proper people to deal with it. Or what if another patient is drugged and loses control, moving to attack others in their state, not realizing what they’re doing? In this case, stunning them or using a body bind will help, and it won’t hurt others. This is the basics of defense you would have to deal with. You can learn to heal them, but you also need to learn how to defend them in case of extreme circumstances. In this case, you are their protector, to keep others from undoing the healing that you have done.”He patted her hand again and moved to sit back, adjusting his seat a bit. He wasn’t used to having conversations like this, it felt weird. But he knew that if he wanted to take his uncle’s spot, he would have to get used to it, to learn how to be in touch with how people thought instead of just being good at spells. Man did he have a lot to learn still. “Thank you for listening to me Lili, I know I said a lot, but I do what you to think on them. If you need to talk about anything, and I mean anything, I am here for you, day or night.”
